United States First Communion Suits: Trouser Types

Figure 1.--This unidentified American boy wears a white, short pants First Communion suit, prbably in the late-1940s or early-50s.

We note Americam boys wearing several different types of trousers with their First Communion suits. We note knee pants, knickers, bloomer knickers, short pants, and long pants. This was affected by both popular fashion and the age of boys doing First Communion. Popular fashion and family preference dictated the choice of trousers. During some periods the boys mostly wore the same type of trousrs. Virtually all the boys wore knee pants or knickers suring the early-20th century. At other tiomes different types f trousers were worn. After World War I in the 1920s we see more variation, including knikes, short panjts, and long pants. The age became standardized at about 7 years old in the early-20th century. Thisof course was a factor in the type of trousers worn.
