Figure 1.--This formal U.S. wedding was held in 1921 or 22. All the children and women wear white. |
This formal wedding was held in 1921 or 1922. It is an Italian-American family. The ring Bearer is
the older of two brothers, one born in 1916 and the other in 1918. (Both are now deceased.) The HBC contributor dated the photo as 1921 or 1922, as the boy looks to be at least 5 or 6 years old.
There are four children in the wedding party. One girl carries the train of the bride's dress. Two more are flower girls. There is also a boy about 5 who serves as the ring bearer with a large white ring pillow. All the children and women are dressed in white outfits.
The men wear tuxedoes with white tie and high collars. Notice the groom's curious stripped gloves. The collars help date the photograph to the 1910s or early 1920s. The HBC contributor who provided the photograph indicated, however, that it was taken in 1921 or 22.
The women and older girls wear different dresses than the younger girls. Their wide-brimmed hats are similar, but also different. The girls wear hats with ruffled brims. They also wear white strap shoes and white stockings. The flower girls themselves have no flowers. Perhaps they carry the large backet of flowers in front of the ring bearer.
The ring bearer's costume is not entirely visible behind the large ring pillow and flower basket.
Boys today would not wear hats to weddings--except perhaps in Scottish or sailor costume. In the 1920s they almost always had hats when serving as ring bearers. This boy's hat is identical with that of the flowe girls and train bearer, a rounded crown and a ruffled brim.
The most destinctive aspect of his outfit is a long cape fastened at the neck. Capes were not normally worn by boys. In this case only the boy wears a cape. The girls are just wearing their dresses.
The ring bearer carries a large ring pillow.
Not a great deal can be mase out about his suit costume. It appears to be a belted tunic-like jacket, worn with white kneepants.
Figure 2.--This closeup of the wedding photograph shows details on the ring bearer's costume. Note that the children are all wearing the same style hats. |
