Illustrating: Information on Boys' Fashions--Burgess Sharrocks

Figure 1.--Burgess Sharrocks drew many of the original Secret Seven illustrations for Enid Blyton. Her 1950s drawings always had the children in traditional school uniforms. The boys generally wore their caps in schools scenes. These boys wear blazers, ties, short trousers, kneesocks, and school sandals.

Burgess Sharrocks appeared in many of the original editions of the Secret Seven. His drawings in the 1950s depict the children in traditional school attire, caps, blazers, jumpers, short pants, kneesocks, and school sandals. This was a reasonably accurate depiction of what boys at private English preparatory schools were wearing in the 1950s. Most state schools at the time dis not have iniforms or were just beginning to adopt them. We have few other details on Lucas' other illustrations.
