Illustrators: Alexander Pakhomov (Russia/Soviet Union, 1900-73)

Figure 1.--Here we note an illustration for Valentina Oseeva's novel "On the skating-rink". It was drawn by Alexey Pakhomov.

Alexander (Alexey) Pakhomov was a popular Soviet illustrator especially know for his work illustrating Turgenev and Tolstoy novels. He also did llustrations for children books, both fiction and poetry books. On the previous page we see a sensitvely done illustration by Pakhomov for a Tolstoy novel. Here we note an illustration for Valentina Oseeva's novel On the skating-rink. Pakhomov also did illustrations for the children's magazine Chizh ("a siskin"). He is described as a "Soviet avant-garde painter, graphic artist and illustrator". I am not sure why the term "avant-guard" is used. His works seems to us to both charming and traditional, but hardly "avant guard".
