Artists Illustrating Boys' Fashions: Elizabeth Gowdy Baker (American, 1860-1927)

Figure 1.--This portrait of an unidentified boy painted in 1905 by Elizabeth Gowdy Baker. He wears a grey suit with a floppy bow. Notice his center part.

We note a painting, "Portrait of a Boy" done about 1905 by Elizabeth Gowdy Baker. The boy is unidentified. It is an excellent portrait of a boy in a suit with a floppy bow. The suit seems to have Norfolk styling. Notice the boy's center part. She was particularly known for her portraits. We know thing about Baker except that she was the founder and president of the Society of Acquarellists. A reader writes, "I own the Elizabeth Gowdy Baker portrait of the young boy (1905) with the center part in his hair and the very red bow tie. I was dressed like this in the thirties as a young boy, but soon the war started and the rest is history, as they say. One funny thing is that even though I don't part my hair in the center any more, and haven't for some sixty or more years, it reappears most every morning when I arise. Just for the fun of it, on some days I just leave it there and relive a few moments of my youth."
