Artists Illustrating Boys' Fashions: Tony Binder (Austrian, 1868-1944)

Figure 1.--We note this Tony Binder 1912 portrait of a boy in a sailor suit. Unfortunatekly we know nothing about the boy. He is presumably Austrian. The boy wears a standard white middy blouse with sleeve badge, although we camn't make it out. Note the boy's short hair cut.

We have very limited information on this Austrian artist. Tony Binder was born in Vienna in 1868. After his studies he travelled quite extensively through countries such as Tunesia, Morocco, and Egypt. One soiurce tells us that he was a well-known Austrian artist in his days. He specialized in marine paintings and later in life also Watercolors and paintings with an Arabic influence. He died in Munich in 1944. We note one 1912 portrait of a boy in a sailor suit. Unfortunatekly we know nothing about the boy. He is presumably Austrian. Given the fact he had his portrait taken and his sailor suit, we would guess he came from a rather affluent family. The boy wears a standard white middy blouse with sleeve badge, although we camn't make it out. Note the boy's short hair cut. Saolor suits were a very popular outfit for boys in Austria.
