Chandler Portraits: Cut-away Jacket Suits

1850s suits

Figure 1.-- Many of Chandler's portraits are signed, but many like this one are classified as "attributed to". Here we see a boy wearing a cut-away jacket suit, a style we see many of the boys Chandler painted wearing. The boy may be Koby Salleny (writing indestinct) written on the back, but the writing looks modern. This was a popular style for younger boys thast was popular during more than half a century. This one, however, is fairly easy to date. Note the wide sleeves with bloused sleeve cuffs. That was popular style at mid-century. The jacket had light-blue kleaf embrioidery. Many of Chandler's portraits are signed, but many like this one are classified as "attributed to". As we are primarily interested in fashion history, we are including them here as they primarily deal with an era before photography was invented or before the advent if the CDV (1860s) when the number of images is relatively limited. Here we see a boy wearing a cut-away jacket suit, a style we see many of the boys Chandler painted wearing. This one, however, is fairly easy to date. Note the wide sleeves with bloused sleeve cuffs. That was popular style at mid-century. We note examples in the 1850s before the Civil War (1861-65). Initially it looked like a bkack suit, but the jacket was dark blue with light-blue leaf emroidery around the sdge of the jacket. The pants were black. The blouse had a Peter Pan collar. We beleve this was part of the blouse and not a detachable collar. There are some unusual aspects to the boy's outfit. He wears shortened-length pants, very rare before the 1860s. Vuirtually all of the images we have fojund at mid-century show boys wearing long pants. Also notice that he is wearing socks, almost always white, rather than long stockings -- leaving part of his legs bare. That was virtully unheard of at the time. Except if ciourse for children going barefoot. He is accompanied by a poorly painted dog.
