Artists Illustrating Boys' Fashions: Thalia Flora-Karavia (Grece, 1871-1960)

Figure 1.-- One of Thalia Flora-Karavia's important works is "A Boy Reading", date unknown. The boy is wearing a white or light colored sailor suit without any detailing. He has bloomer above-the-knee pants and a wide-brimmed sailor hat. Note how the boys sailor scarfe is tied, more like a floppy collar bow than a sailor neckerchief.

Thalia Flora-Karavia was perhaps the leading woman painter in Greece. We have little biographical information on her. She painted a variety of subjects, including war scenes, landscapes, portraits, still lives and interiors. She traveled widely to study great painters whose art is displayed in the museums of Europe's great cities using the opportunity of showing her work. Perhaps her greatest work is "Lady with Pearls". Many of her portraits explore the luminous use of light. One of her important works is "A Boy Reading", date unknown. A HBC reader believes it was probably painted in the 1920s. HBC would probaly date it about 1910. The boy is wearing a white or light colored sailor suit without any detailing. He has bloomer above-the-knee pants and a wide-brimmed sailor hat. Note how the boys sailor scarfe is tied, more like a floppy collar bow than a sailor neckerchief. Also note that it was white, even with white suits, black scarves were more common.
