Artists Illustrating Boys' Fashions: Trevor Flower (Ireland, 1830s-40s)



Figure 1.--We note genre work ny Trevor Flower showing scenes of the Irish country side. One especially interesting work shows a group of teenagers dancing at a crossroads somewhere in Ireland. It is useful 19th century evidence of Irish step dancing. Interestingly it shows some use of the arms which is not permitted in modern Irish dance. The youths are not wearing costumes, but their normal clothing. Holding: National Gallery of Ireland.

A reader has mentioned Trevor Flower to us, an Irish artist active in the early-mid-19th century. We have been unable to find much information on him. Perhaps ann Irish reader will know more. We do note genre work showing scenes of the Irish country side. One especially interesting work shows a group of teenagers dancing at a crossroads somewhere in Ireland. It is useful 19th century evidence of Irish step dancing. Interestingly it shows some use of the arms which is not permitted in modern Irish dance. The youths are not wearing costumes, but their normal clothing. The colors shown are interesting. Some seem to reflet some of the colors popular for boys' kilt costumes and used by some dancing schools. In recent years, however, we note girls dancing in dresses dome in very bright colors.
