Einar Hein also did many portraits of the people in northerrn Denmark, including quite a number of children. We notice a portrait of a boy who grew up to be an important German movie actor. It is titled 'Portrait of a Boy' painted (1919). The boy is German actor Erland Erlandsen (1912-2003), who had Danish origins. Erland would have been about 7 years old in the portarit. Erland has perfectly cut Dutch boy bangs. A matching blue cap went with the suit, but Hein decided not to include that in the portrait., probably o as not to detrvt from his pereectlyvdone hair style.
The boy has a large round lace collar with matching wrist cuffs. The bright blue velvet suit has a huge satin sash which presumably covers button-on connctions. Erland has white ankle socks with Brown strap shoes. The elaborate outfit suggests a wealthy family.
Erland was a member of Vienna’s Volkstheater and Burgtheater ensemble, and later the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel. In addition to the painting, the lot includes the boy’s blue lace-trimmed velvet suit
We notice a similar outfit painted by François-Joseph Damien. It is landscapes, however for which Hein is best known. Of course for HBC it is his portraiture which is of greatest interest.
