The first painting of children we know of is a three-quarter potrait of the three Paterson children: twins George (1778–1846) and John (1778–1858) and Margaret (17??-1845). The boys are about 12-years old. Their sister a little younger. The prents were George and Anne Paterson, of Castle Huntly in Perthshire. This is his signture piece -- adding playful energy to the portrait of children. His portraits of the parents were standard static, serious works. Raeburn paints a story. John, distracts his sister by waving the frit kladen branch over her shoulder while he plucks an apple from her basket. George in the middle stares at the viewer. We are left to guess if the cotherlt embrace of his sister is real affection or if he complicit in the playful mischief. George wears mustard-coloured trousers and a bight red jacket. John wears a nlck jcket and similsr nustasrd colored trousers. Margaret weears a withe a white dress with ablue sash. All three has frilly open ruffled collars. Notice that there was no trace of Scottish dress even though Perthshire is well intyo the Highlands. This was before Queen Victoria's reign and the popularization of Scottisg fashion. There is no way of telling that this was a Scottish portrait without knowledge of the provinance. It is a briliant work, amazing that sone ne could poduce art of his caliber with no academc training.
