Carlos Reis (Portugal, 1863-1940)

Figure 1.--This portrait seems to be signed Carlos Reis. We believe the artist is Carlos Reis and the portrair signed. We do not know who the boy is. He looks rather English to us, but is presumably a Portuguese boy. The portait seems to be dated, but not very clearly. It may be 1923, although we would have guessed it as dine a little earlier. The fact that the boy wears his suit with three quarter socks does rather confirm a Portuguese painting. Long sockings were not very common in Portugal.

We do not yet know much about Portuguese art. We do note one artist, Carlos Antônio Rodrigues dos Reis (1863-1940), although our information on him is still very limited. This portrait seems to be signed Carlos Reis. We believe the artist is Carlos Reis and the portrair signed. We do not know who the boy is. Childhood

Carlos Antonio Rodrigues Dos Reis was born in Torres Novas, Portugal (1863).

Education

Reis strongly influenced by Hisses Port, Joseph Blanc and Bonnat.

Body of Work

Reis painted in different formats. His work was primarily portraits, historica svenes, and landscape. One of his important works was a portrait of Portuguese President Epitácio Person (1865-1942) which he pained while in Brazil (1929). Reis seems to have preferred working in the outdoors. He played an important role in the "Outdoor Group" which came to be called "Hisses Port". The group including painters and students searched for colorful places to work.

Unidentified Boy Portrait

We know that Reis pinted portrairs. We do not kow a great deal about the portraits he painted, but we believe that the portrait of the boy here is one of his portraits (figure 1). This portrait seems to be signed Carlos Reis. We believe the artist is Carlos Reis and the portrair signed. We do not know who the boy is. He looks rather English to us, but is presumably a Portuguese boy. The portait seems to be dated, but not very clearly. It may be 1923, although we would have guessed it as done a little earlier. We do not think it was ine in the 1900s, however, as the boy would have probably had a kneepants with the ornanental buttons at the knee hem. So the late 1910s or early 20s is probanly correct. The boy wears what looks like a maroon short pants velvet suit with a large white collar. It is not an Eton collar as it has round tips. The fact that the boy wears his suit with three quarter socks does rather confirm a Portuguese painting. Long sockings were not very common in Portugal.

Portuguese Art

Reis played an important role in developing modern Portuguese art. He was a founding member of the National society of Belas-Artes.

Last Years

Reis died at Coimbra (1940).
