Von Schadow Portraits: Paul and Max Von Mila (Germany, about 1810)

Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow

Figure 1.--One of Schadow regular portrait is brothers Paul and Max Von Mila, aristocratic German boys in Berlin. The boys are the sons of the Germamn historian G. Mila. We know it was painted in the Belin because Bellevue Palace, a Berlin landmark is in the background., but faintly painted. It is one of Schadow's earliest portraits, probably about 1810, but not long after the artisdt's experience in the Prussian Army and before his time broad studying the great masters. Schadow was still developing his portaiture skills. The boys wear black suits weith short jackets. They are not, however, skeleton suits because the jacket does not button on to the pants. Both boys have open collars with plain, but not very promounced pointed collars and white vests. They look to be about 8-11 years old.

We notice several Von Schadow portraits of interest for our fashion study. Several look like normal commissioned portraits for German boys.
