Artists Illustrating Boys' Fashions: Unknown

Figure 1.--HBC does not recognize the artist. We would guess the fashions are about the 1830s, perhaps the 40s. We are not sure, however, if it is a contemporary piece. As to the country, we would guess England or France, probably France."

Here we have archived both unknown artists and unknown paintings. In some cases we have found signed works, only we know nothing about the artists. With the artists listed here, we do not even know what country they come from. We have found or HBC readers have sent us paintings that we can not identify as to who was the artist. It is possible to roughly date the chronological period depicted, but without knowing the artist we can not know whethervor not it is a contemporatu depiction. Of course ot is the cntemprary works that are especially valuable to HBC. Historical paintings have to be taken with mucg greater skepticism as to the accuracy of the clothing depicted. Also without knowing the artist we can not be sure swhat country is beng depicted, although sometimes there are clues in the painting.

Unknown Artists

If we know the country, we will archive the unknown artists in the national art section.

H Cürn

The artist here is H Cürn. We believe he is European, but have no idea what country he is from. We do know that he was active in 1896. All that we know about him is that he was what looks like a talented, but naive artist. He is the kind of arist that often very little information exists. He did portraits, but probably had little training. The portrait is a boy probably about 6-8 years old dressed in a blue sailor suit with an unusual collar. The name might seem German , but the boy's sailot collar suggests to us that thevboy may hve lived somewhere in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Perhaps our readers will know more.

Painting 1

A HBC reader writes, "Your web site is super, but I have a painting (figure 1) as you can see and I don't know who the artist was or which time period is being represented. Also I do not know if they are American or English. HBC does not recognize the artist. We would guess the fashions are about the 1830s, perhaps the 40s. We are not sure, however, if it is a contemporary piece. As to the country, we would guess England or France, probably France."
