 Paul Hermann Wagner

Figure 1.-- Paul Hermann Wagner's work includes many emotive, romantic scenes that seem intended to capture a childhood moment. His work was not linited to children, but this was a very large part of it. Wagner was a prolific artist. Many of his works appear on the internet and are reproduced on many sites, but very little bibliograpgical information. The painting has been called 'Mother and Child'. " we can see a very idealized depiction of the woman and a more realistic depiction of the boy. Probably a more accurate title is 'Waldfee (Forest Fairy)'.

Paul Hermann Wagner (1852-1937) was a German painter. Like other painters of the 19th and early 20th centuries, he painted many genre scenes. Wagner began his art career learning glass painting at the Josephinenhütte in the Giant Mountains. As a young man with his glass skiils, he moved to Munich (1875). He found worked as a porcelain painter. It is at this time began academic studies of art for the first time. He attended the Königliche Kunstgewerbeschule München (1875) amd the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, graduating (1881). Wagner's work includes many emotive, romantic scenes that seem intended to capture a childhood moment. The image genre is a good exanmple (figure 1). His work was not linited to children, but this was a very large part of it. Wagner was a prolific artist. Many of his works appear on the internet and are reproduced on many sites, but very little bibliograpgical information. One interesting item here is the calf covering, essentially hosiery without the foot--the Loiferls. Unfortunately we have been unable to find much informatyion on Loiferl. A provlen here is that Google insists on searching for loafers. Thus we do not have any histirical information. We belkieve they appeared in the 19th century. Our initial guess was they were worn by boys going barefoot as a kind of leg warmer. This would not, however explain why so many adults weore them. Hopefully our German readers will provide some infornation.
