Unknown European Artists

unknown European artist

Figure 1.-- All we know for sure here is that the noy here was painted in the early-19th century, probably about 1810-15. We think the artist is French, but an American boy is possible. The suit is black velvet, somewhat like a skeleton suit, but not details are painterd in. We do see a large open lacy collar. The boys is wearing his father's heavy battle sword. Google image search suggests that the boy is George Taylor II, a descendant of a signer of the Declaration of Independence Google concluded that it shows influences from both France and the United States asnd was painted by American artist Rembrandt Peale who was influenced by Neoclassical French painters like Baron Gérard. We believ that this is inaccurate.

Here we will load art works we cannot identify. This usually means we canot determine the artist. Through the magic of Google, we can usually find the artist if weccan not vdetermine whobthey are. And image search usually reveals the artist, but this does not always work. Without the name of the artist or at least the country, it is difficult to reliably load the image without it being lost in our 30,000 plus pages. Hopefully over time we can find who the artist is. We think we can for the most part reliably destinguish European images, but some American or Canadian images may slip in. We hope reades will let is know if you recognize any of these works.

All we know for sure here is that the noy here was painted in the early-19th century, probably about 1810. We think the artist is French, but an American boy is possible. The suit is black velvet, somewhat like a skeleton suit, but not details are painterd in. We do see a large open lacy collar. The boys is wearing his father's heavy battle sword. Google image search suggests that the boy is George Taylor II, a descendant of a signer of the Declaration of Independence Google concluded that it shows influences from both France and the United States asnd was painted by American artist Rembrandt Peale, a son of Charkes Wilson Peale, who was influenced by Neoclassical French painters like Baron Gérard. According to Google, "The subtle transitions in color and tone in Taylor’s head and hands reflect the impact of Gérard’s fine modeling and distinctive palette. The composition and details of this work suggest the American colonial and Federal portraits among which Peale had been raised. The time prtopd is correct -- 1811. We know, however, that this is not ccuirater becsause Google notices ' an open-air, stone alcove with a landscape scene." Peale's actual potrait of George is archived on our site.
