Serbian Sculpture The Artisan and His Apprentice

Figure 1.--A reader tells us, "I found this sculpture of a classical Greek-styled man and boy in Belgrade. it is my understanding that the building is named 'Nestoravic.' It was once a vocational college specializing in Art and craft skills of the artisan. The apprentice artisans lived on the premises. It also housed a hotel. It is now home to Radio Belgrade."

A HBC reader has provided us a photograph he noted in Belgradem Serbia. "I found this sculpture of a classical Greek-styled man and boy in Belgrade. it is my understanding that the building is named 'Nestoravic.' It was once a vocational college specializing in Art and craft skills of the artisan. The apprentice artisans lived on the premises. It also housed a hotel. It is now home to Radio Belgrade. The man and boy sculpture is called 'The Artisan and his and his Apprentice.' It was designed by Bogdan and completed in 1933. The artisan is depicted as a healthy individual with a strong work ethic. His persona is almost God like. his apprentice seems to be happy learning. He is like his master a healthy robust boy who is a hard working student. The boy appears to be dressed in short trousers and wears working clothes." HBC is not quite sure how to describe the clothing. The boy's clothing looks almost like an Ancient Greek garment. A reader writes, "The boy is shown to be very fond of the master craftsman. It seems to be a very close apprenticeship. There is a very comfortable majestic feeling about the sculpture."
