Delesseps Family: Paris Park Outing (1879)

Figure 1.--This portrait shows the De Lesseps children in 1879. We thought that it was taken while their father was in Panama trying to build a canal, but it was actually taken in Panama. Two of the three oldest children are boys. All of the children are wearing identical light summer dresses, presumably on a hot summer day in Paris. Click on the image to see the full photograph.

A reader writes, "I have been able to identify the children in several of the photos, thanks to your contributor who gave the dates of birth. The attachment with this message in the famous photo of the children and their father in the horse drawn cart. I believe some people think this was taken in Panama. It was not. Trawling through the net, I found the same photo in its mount. The Photographer was 'Photographie Hippique' (Horse) and the address is the Bois de Boulonge, which is in Paris. I couldn't read the address on the horse and cart photo, so I searched for the Photographer on the web. There are several images showing riders on horseback and the identical mount. The Bois de Boulonge like Hyde Park in London (Rotten Row) is a favourite place for the gentry to ride their horses in Paris. I can see that the cart was necessary for the De Lesseps because of the size of the family."
