Biographical Details on Boys' Clothing Styles: Gavin Maxwell--Shirts and Blouses

Figure 1.--Gavin is seen here with his sister Christina. The portarit was probably taken about 1920.

Gavin is a portarit with his sister is shown wearing a white blouse with a wide white collar. He wears a necktie with it and holds toy monkey. I'm not sure how to call this blouse. It is not severe enough and too large for an Eton collar and not rounded enough for a Peter Pan collar--perhaps an early version. He weas it with a neck tie. I'm not sure what he would have worn with this. The two to our modern eye do not seem to go together, but pergaps thus was stylis in 1920. In informal snapshots he wears a kind of Russian blouse with checks around the colar and down the fromt with his checked kilt. The other boys wear more ordinary looking sweaters and shirts. Presunmably only Gavin had this Russian blouse type shirt--but all we have to go on is the photographs. He also describes wearing a grey flannel shirt with kilt.
