Figure 1.-- This photograph shows him wearing a colored long-sleeve shirt with a tie (figure 1). We are not sure about the color, but the tie and shirt matched.

Christopher Milne: Childhood Clothing

Available photographs provide some information about Christopher's clothes. We only have a few photographs at this time so our inforation is limited. We notice that as an adult he commented negatively on his smock. We have not yet found, however, any detailed written information describing his childhood clothes. It is interesting to compare the photographs to the charming illustrations by Ernest Shepherd in the Christopher Robin/Winnie the Poo books. The photographs show Christopher wearing many different garments and not the rather limited number of garments Shepard used in his illustrations. We do see the garments Shepherd illustrated, but they were not the only item's Christopher wore.

Sweaters

We see Chritopher wearing what looks like a patterened pull-over sweater. While he must have worn the sweater for cool weather. We note he still wore short pants.

Shirts

We see Chritopher wearing a variety of shirts. Many seem to be shot sleeve shirts. We note one shirt with white collar trim and matching pants. He seems to be wearing T-shirts (vests) undder some shirs. One photograph shows him wearing a colored long-sleeve shirt with a tie (figure 1). We are not sure about the color, but the tie and shirt matched.

Pants

All of the pictures I have seen of Christopher as a boy show him wearing short pants. As far as we can tell, he did not have any long trousers.

Smocks

Christopher wore gingham smocks with matching short pants. Smocks were much more common across the Channel in France. We do see some British boys wearing smocks, mostly boys from affluent families. Smocks with matching pants, however were not very common. Looking back, Christopher comented negatively on his smocks, but there is no indicatin that he objected to them as a boy.

Hosiery

Christopher seems to have mostly worn white-three quarter socks. Once he began school, he would have worn grey knee socks. We notice that he commonly wore socjs with strap shoes, but might not wear socks with his T-bar sandals.

Sandals

Photograhs show that Christopher wore closed-toe sandals without socks, often with a gingham smock for play. They appear to be the "T" strap school sandals. We also note Christopher wearing the Mary Jane single bar strap shoes that Shepard drew for Christopher Robin.
