Figure 1.--Montgomery Boynton Augell had his portrait taken at 5 years of age in 1894. We are not positive that is the spelling of his last name. The script on the back looks like there may have been another letter. The portrait was taken in Rochester, New York. The ivory mount was popular in the 1890s.

Montgomery Boynton Augell (United States, 1894)

Montgomery Boynton Augell had his portrait taken at 5 years of age in 1894. We are not positive that is the spelling of his last name. The script on the back looks like there may have been another letter. The portrait was taken in Rochester, New York. Montgomery wears a fashionable knee pants sailor suit. The sailor suit was a standard for American boys by the 1890s. As can be seen here there were a wide range of styles. He has a soft white cap. There is a dark tally, but I can't make out any lettering. It is a stripped suit, but we are unsure about the color of the stripes. Blue is the most likely, but there were other colors. The "v" collar is done with a white front and colored back. The dark dickey has white stripes. The sailor bloyse has cuffed sleeves. Note the horizontal stripping on the cuffs. Notice it was worn without a scarfe and there does not seem to be a lanyards and whistle. The knee pants do not seem to have ornamental buttons. He wears dark long stockings even though the suit is a white stripped suit. The stockings were probably black. He also has long curled hair. The portrait was inscribed, "For his dear Aunt Rebecca".

The Boy

Montgomery Boynton Augell had his portrait taken at 5 years of age. We are not positive that is the spelling of his last name. The script on the back looks like there may have been another letter. It is not a name we have seen before, but it is a last name in America. It may have German origins. A reader writes, "Fairly sure Augell is correct. If you look, you'll see the writer has put a full stop at the end of each line. It looks to me like they did the same for the Augell but didn't lift the nib enough to seperate the full stop from the last L so they did it again." We know nothing about Montgomery's family, but the way he is dressed, it is fair to say that he came from an affluent family. All we know about the family was that there was an Aunt Rebecca. The portrait was inscribed, "For his dear Aunt Rebecca".

Chronology

The portrait is dated so we know it was taken in 1894.

Location

The portrait was taken in Rochester, New York so we can assume Montgomery was from Rochester.

A reader writes, "It occurs to me that this photo is quite interesting from the point of view of the stocking length. One of the general ideas that HBC has given rise to is that long stockings tended to be quite short before the turn of the 20th century owing to the length of the knee pants--i.e., that they came just above the knees. We do have some evidence to suggest that, but this photo (1894) shows that long stockings could obviously be quite long in certain cases, reaching (as in this photo) to at least mid-thigh."

Hair

Montgomery has long curled hair.
