*** Sterling G. Anderson

Sterling G. Anderson
Figure 1.--Here we have an early CDV portrait of a New Hampshire boy named Sterling G. Anderson. The portrait is undated, but we would guess it was taken about 1872-73. Stirling looks to be about 5 years old. The portrait was taken in Keene, New Hampshire. Sterling wears a tunic suit with diagonal Scottish plaid trim. The knee pants worn with the tunic also have the plaid trim.

Sterling G. Anderson (United States, 1868- )

Here we have an early CDV portrait of a New Hampshire boy named Sterling G. Anderson. The portrait is undated, but we would guess it was taken in 1872-73. The colored back suggests to us that it probably is not from the 1860s. Note the stand at the back to hold the subject steady. Stirling looks to be about 5 years old. We do know his parents name, Abbie Howard Anderson and George H. (I think) Anderson. The portrait was taken in Keene, New Hampshire. Sterling wears a tunic suit with diagonal Scottish plaid trim. The knee pants worn with the tunic also have the plaid trim. Also notice the stylish buttons and large black buckle belt. He wears white long stockings with his outfit. Unfortunately we do not know what kind of headgear Stirling wore with his tunic suit. I'm not sure about the ethnicity of the family, but it would not seem Scottish. The plaid trim may be some of an association with kilts as a tunic is a Scottish garment. I have, however, not commonly noted plaid trimmed tunics.

Parents

We do know his parents name, Abbie Howard Anderson and George H. (I think) Anderson. His parents are as listed on the back of the picture. His dad was 26 years old when the census was taken in Alstead on June 25, 1870 and his mom was 22 years old. His dad was, in 1870, a clerk in a hotel. We know nothing little about the family, but the fashionable outfit suggested to us that the family was affluent. We note however that his father was a hotel clerk and laer a carpenter. This suggests that Stirling did nit come from a particularly affluent family, but that he did in a town.

Location

The portrait was taken in Keene, New Hampshire.

Childhood

Here we have an early CDV portrait of a New Hampshire boy named Sterling G. Anderson. The portrait is undated, but the 1870 Federal Census tells us that he was born in 1868. He was born in the town of Alstead, Cheshire County, New Hampshire. The colored back suggests to us that the portrait it probably is not from the 1860s. Note the stand at the back to hold the subject steady. Stirling looks to be about 5 years old. That would mean that the portrait was taken about 1873. Stirling next appears in the 1880 Census. He is 12 years old and still living with his parents in the same town. His dad is now listed as being a carpenter

Childhood Clothing

We do not have much information about how Sterling was dressed as a boy. We do have this one portrait. One of the questions we had about these tunics is who wore them. Stirling's background conforms our assessment tht they were mostly worn by urban residents, but not necessarily just the most affluent which we initially thought.

Education

Adult Life

The 1890 census doesn't exist. It was destroyed in a fire. Stirling appears in the 1900 census still living in Alstead, New Hampshire. He is married to a woman named Eliza. He is employed as a tinsmith. There is no record of him in the 1910 census that I could find. He appears in the 1920 census still living in Alstead. He is listed as being divorced. His daughter is living with him. Her name was Marcelline and she was 18 years old on January 10, 1920 when the census was taken in Alstead. Sterling is listed as a laborer. He doesn't appear in the 1930 census.
