Brassey Boys (England, 1903)


Figure 1.-- Here we see a portrait of Cyril and Gerard Brassey. The older boy is Cyril. He wears a vested suit with a long jacket and jodpurs with an Eton collar. The younger boy is Gerard a Fauntleroy outfit. He wears a tunic suit with side buttons and a flouncy ruffled collar and matching wrist cuffs. The tunic suit includes knee pants and long stockings. He also has buckle shoes. Gerard was a 2nd Lieutenant in the Coldstream Guards and was killed in action as the Allied lasunch the war0winning Hundred Days campaign (1918). .

This is a family snapshot of the Brassy boys. They are the sons of Henry Leonard Campbell Brassey, 1st Baron Brassey of Apethorpe (1870-1958) and Lady Violet Brassey. There father was known as Sir Henry Brassey and was a Conservative Party politician. He purchased Apethorpe Hall near Peterborough which became his seat (1904). He was elected to the House of Commons for Northamptonshire North (1910-18). He then represented Peterborough (1918-29). While a member of parliament, he fought in the First World War, becoming a major in the Northamptonshire Yeomanry and in the West Kent Yeomanry. He also served as a Justice of the Peace for Northamptonshire and for Kent, as High Sheriff of Northamptonshire and as a Deputy Lieutenant of Northamptonshire. After World War I he was created Baronet of Apethorpe. He was raised to the peerage as Baron Brassey of Apethorpe (1938). Furious debates were conducted in Parliament over the NAZIs and defense preparations, but Brassey was no longer a MP. The Brassy's had six sons, two of whom died in infnbcy. Two others predeceased their father. The sons included Bernard Thomas Brassey, 2nd Baron Brassey of Apethorpe (1905-1967), 5th and eldest surviving son and heir.
