The CDV has been colorized. Tom was born Secember 7, 1858. So he would have been 9 years old when the portrait was taken. The image is a little unclear, but Tom seems to be wearing a tunic suit with what looks like bloomer knickers and white stockings. Note the diaginal styling. That was popular in the late-1860s and 70s.

It is not as pronounced as we ofen see, perhaps because it is an early example. That was popular in the late-1860s and 70s. Notice how small the collar is, it can barely be seen. Note a prominant collar button on the tunic. Interestingly, the studio has colorized a potted plant and cloth throw, but not the boy's outfit, except for the blue hat band on his rounded-crown hat. Perhaps the tunic suit was grey or brown. It seems rather strange to color items like plants and not the boy's outfit.
