Figure 1.--This looks to be an early America caninet card. The first cabinet cards appeared onky in 1866. The portrait looks like the late-1860s to us based on the set, but the early-70s is possible. We do know the name of the boy, Agustus Davies who was 5-years old. Augustus wears a kilt suit. It has Scottish touches like military cuffs and a large belt buckle. These were usually only seen with Highland kilt outfits. There are bows where a sporan might be. Bows like this were very rare. The kilt suit fashion was just beginning and comventions had not yet been established. White long stockings are unusual with kilt suits. This was more aeflection of popukar hisiert trends. Whir stocking were prevalent in the 1860s. The kilt suit was just beginning to be a major style for American boys. This is one of the few examples, however wurh the boy wearing white instead of dark stockings. This is vecuse after the 60s, white long stocking began going out of style. Augustus Davies (United States, late-1860s)

This looks to be an early America caninet card. The first cabinet cards appeared onky in 1866. The portrait looks like the late-1860s to us based on the set. It was very commo in the 1860s to take 'far away' portraits with the subject not filling most of the image. This looks like how many CDVs we shot, even though it is a cbinet card. While the late-60s is the most likely date, the early-70s is possible. We do know the name of the boy, Agustus Davies who was 5-years old. Augustus already has short hair. We do not know at what age it was cut. He wears a kilt suit. He has a small collar and stock-like bow. His cut-away jacket has Scottish touches like military cuffs and he has a large belt buckle. These were usually only seen with Highland kilt outfits. Notice how stiff the kilt skirt is. We are not sure why that was, perhaps a heavy fabric. There are bows where a sporan might be. Bows like this were very rare. The kilt is not a plaid and is not pleted. The kilt suit fashion was just beginning and comventions had not yet been established. White long stockings are unusual with kilt suits. This was more a reflection of popular hosiery trends. Whir stocking were prevalent in the 1860s. The kilt suit was just beginning to be a major style for American boys. This is one of the few examples, however wurh the boy wearing white instead of dark stockings. This is vecuse after the 60s, white long stocking begn going out of style. The studio was Slee Bros. in Poughkeepsie, New York.
