Albert Hawley (United States, about 1900-05)

Figure 1.--The dealer defines this portraot as a CDV because oif its small size, about 3 3/4" X 2 1/2". We would call it a small cabinet card. At the turn of the century we suddenly begin seeing new sabinet card mounts in many different styles and sizes. This isone of tose cards which also helps date the portrait to the early-20th century. We would guess about 1900-05. We see a boy wearing weaing a fancy ruffled Fauntleroy vlouse with a back flap. The blouse is done in polka dots. Mother has added a coloful floppy bow. He had an open jacket to show off his blouse. The most notable aspect about the portrait is Albert's righlet curls. There are no long ringlets, they are well off his shoulders. Instead he has two top ringlets. Top curls were less commonn thann side and back ringlets. We do see a number of top curls, but they are mostly one large top curl. And the ones we have found tend to be before the turn-of-the century. The boy is Albert Hawley. No photographer or location is indicated as is often the case in these new style portrait mounts.

Nor do we know how old Albert is. A reader found it difficult to estimate, but within the 4-6 years old range. We might go with 4 years old.
