He has long hair, but it has not been done in ringlets which by the 1900s was declining in popularity. He wears a very plain knee pants sailor suit without any of the standard sailor stripe decoration. Earlier he probably woud have worn some kind of skirted garments. The portrait is not dated, but the mount style and the boy's laceup shoes suggest the 1900s as does the white whicker furniture. The studio was T.A. Hinson in San Marcos, Texas.
