James Hoffman (United States, 1905)

Figure 1.--This snapshot shows Harry Hoffman and his son James, posing with their cat on a chair. The snapshot is an AZO postcard. It is not postally used, but we would guess was taken about 1905. Note the father's long frock coat. James wears a blouse with what looks like a detchable collar and a small bowtie. We think he is wearing knee pants rather than knickers, but it is a little difficult to tell.

We think he is wearing knee pants rather than knickers, but it is a little difficult to tell. A reader writes, By the way, I believe you are also correct about the knee pants rather than knickers. I think that is pretty clear by the way the trousers hang and their straight hems at the bottom. " A reader writes, "I agree about the knee pants. There is no blousing. Maybe the picture is just faded, but it looks as though the boy is wearing not black long stockings but tan or brown ones. If so, that would be rather unusual for 1905, wouldn't it? The tiny little bow tie and the strached separate collar, attached with collar pins in front and back, is interesting." A newspaper article reported a shortage of tan stockings in 1904. We see several boys wearing these small bow ties in the early-20th century. As to the stockings, the color of stockings is always difficult to tell. Lighting does affect the appearance of color and fadeing of the photogrph is another factor that has to be considered. A further factor here is that the color of the stockings faded as a result of washings. Stockings came in other colors, but here I would guess black.
