Walter M. Hoskin (United States, 1890)

Figure 1.--This is a cabinet card portrait of Walter M. Hoskin. He was 5 years 8 months old when the portrait was taken September 2, 1890, perhaps he was preparing for school. Walter wears a collar buttoning jacket which has been after the top button been left unbuttoned, giving the appearance of a cut-away jacket. The jacket has vericle vents, part of Norfolk styling. It is unclear what kind of shirt he is wearing, perhps a shirt waist. There are no Fauntleroy elements, either neckwear or fancy collar despite the fact that the portrait was taken during the Fauntlroy craze and many boys his age wore Funtleroy suits or decorarive trim.

A reader comments, "This image brings up a good point worth discussing. The Fauntleroy craze was all the rage in 1890. It involved a mix of fashion and status. Although many boys were dressed in Fauntleroy style as the photographic record shows. Only a minority of boys wore Fauntleroy suits, but many boys wore outfits with some Fauntleroy elements or items. Walter here has a child wearing a rather plain outfit with a Norfolk styling elemnts. There is not a trace of Fauntleroy styling. The jacket has a rounded Peter Pan styled collar, although the term was not yet in use. The boy also has a prominentky displayed straw hat looking somewhat like a boater. It is His jacket is worn open to show off the blouse. This was common wigh Fauntleroy blouses, but Walter's blouse except for striped, it is rather plain. He wear knee pants with the 3 button hen detaiking. His hair is also rather short in sharp contrast to the Fauntleroy ringlet curls that some boys had. Waltr here shows that not all parents at the time were entralled with the Fauntleroy Craze. "
