Hogan Children: Graduation (United States, 1907)

Figure 1.--This large-format new style cabinet card looks like a graduation portrait of siblings G. Ward Hogan and his sister Juanita Hogan taken June 12, 1907. The teens are 13 and 14 years old. The boy is about to turn 15 years old. Juanita wears a formal, flouncy white dress with two large white hair bows. G. Ward wears a single breasted suit with a contrasting white vest--a fashion flare that was not all that common at the time. It is a knee pants suit. This is intereting because it was just before we begin to see American boys shifting from knee pants to knickers (1908-09). Both wear black long stockings and high-top shoes.

This large-format new style cabinet card looks like a graduation portrait of siblings G. Ward Hogan and his sister Juanita Hogan taken June 12, 1907. At the time as is still the case, the school year ends in June. A given the diploma scrolls they are holding and the boy's ribbon, presumably a recognition for academic achievement. It is certainly a graduation portrait. Although the teens are different ages, they seem to be in the same grade. Scrolls were only given out for gaduation, not for completing a grade. At the time, many primary schools went to the 8th grade. Many children ended their education at this point. These teens look to be a comfortable middle class family and my have gone on to the 9th grade in a senior high school. We believe that this is an 8th grade gradution. They teens are 13 and 14 years old. The boy is about to turn 15 years old. Notice the sleeve length of Ward's suit jacket. It is obviously not an old suit that the boy is outgrowing. It looks more like a new suit that he would be wearing for a year or two. Juanita's birthday is January 27. G. Ward's birthday is August 6. Juanita wears a formal, flouncy white dress with two large white hair bows. G. Ward wears a single breasted suit with a contrasting white vest--a fashion flare that was not all that common at the time. It is a knee pants suit. This is interesting because it was just before we begin to see American boys shifting from knee pants to knickers (1908-09). Both wear black long stockings and high-top shoes. For some reason, 'Milton and Opal' is also written on the back, this could be the parents. As is the case of many of these new style card, there is no indication where the portrait was taken.
