John and Charles Howell (United States, 1860s)

Figure 1.-- This Civil War period albumen portrait shows two brothers, John and Charles Howell. The portrait is undated, but we would guess was taken in the late-1860s. The albumen print rules out the 1850s and military-styled jacket was not a common tyle in the 1870s, so the 1860s seems a likely date. Most albumen prints were CDVs or cabinet cards, but they could be done in large formats like this one. The boys are about 5-10 years of age. John wears a collar-buttoning blue jacket. This was a popular military inspired style during the 1840s-60s. Charles wears a checked blouse black and white blouse with blue pants and a military-styled peak cap. The print has been expertly hand colored.

Rays grandfather smoked and drank and lived to be 95. Uncle Charlie never married was abstemious? and lived to the same age." The photo opening on back measures about 8 by 10 inches.
