Hudkins Boys (United States, mid 1890s)

Figure 1.-- This cabinet card portrait shows the three Hudkins boys (Walter, Ernest, ancd James Jr.). Th boys looks to be about 3-9 years old. They are all dressed like in elaborate Fauntleroy blouses, knee pants, long stockings, and high-top button shoes. The older brothers have very elborate striped Fauntleroy blouses. The younge boy has a whit blouse, probnly as elaborate as his older brother, but it is difficult to tell because it is so white.

They also have floppy bows, but they are rather small given 1890s styles. The conventions of the time were to wear suit jackts, but younger boys at the time could wear just blouses as we see here during the summer. We might have guessed the potrait was taken atvthe tutn of the 20th centyry in the early-1900s decade, but the dealer tells us that the photograher was only active 1878-97. Which means thzat the portrait was probably taken in the mid-1890s. The studio was Lockhart in Bryan, Ohio. This was a small tiwen at th northwest coener of the state. The studio was called The Halls. The phtographer was apparently a well-known Ohio photographer. The mount is the clasic style that was most commonm before the turn-ofg-the century, but we see some after the-turn-of-the century whixch is why the dates for the photograoher are so importnt. It is a white mount done in gold print.
