Figure 1.--This portrait of Mrs. J. Kastner's children was taken during March, 1929, in Montreal. There are two siblings--a boy and his sister who seem to be about 7 or 8 years old. The girl wears an interesting print dress with a bodice front and lacings. The boy wears a white shirt and striped tie, a patterned pullover sweater, woolen knitted shorts and tan long stockings with hose supporters. |

The tan long stockings seem to be worn both for formality and for warmth. These are dress-up clothes, since the photograph was taken at a professional photographic studio. We don't know the Christian names of the children. A reader writes, "Kastner also sounds like an Anglophone name, I think, rather than French. In the 1920s the Anglophone families of Montreal were perhaps more prominent socially and more affluent--the sort that would have had professional photographers take pictures of their children." I can't say I know about the ethnicity of Kastner. I do agree with our readers basic point that Anglophone families in Montreal were socially pominent at the time.
