Heinz Höhne (Germany, early 1920s)

Figure 1.--This little German boy, Heinz Köhne was photographed with his goodie cone on his first day of school. Heinz would have been 6 years old. He really made out well. His cone is enormous. He would have had to lug in all the way to school. Surely he must have been the envy of the class. No one would have had a larger cone. But he couldn't get into the cone until after school. That must have been really a trial for the children.

He also wears long stockings and brand new high-top shoes. We can't see his book satchell, but the small case in front is for his lunch. A reader writes, "Two features of this nice photo interested me. First the shoes, which have very shiny metal hooks for the laces at the top. I don't think we have seen such a clear illustration of the lacing hooks on boys' hightop shoes in past photographs. Second, the woolen long stockings appear to be worn over knee socks with cuffs. We have noted double socks before in German schoolboy dress, but usually the boys have worn long stockings with ankle socks on top as additional protection for the feet. Here it would appear that knee socks have been put on first and turned over to make cuffs below the knee. Then long stockings have been put on second and attached to garter straps on the boy's Leibchen. This would appear to be quite unusual. Perhaps mother was concerned for the boy's warmth on an especially cold day. The boy is very neatly and carefully dressed. Note the neatly pressed salt-and-pepper tweed short trousers and matching belted jacket."
