Figure 1.--Here we see a CDV portrait of the Nicholson Brothers with their father. They were from Notingham. The image is undated, but we woild guess it was taken in the 1870s, both because of the clothing and the style of the mount. Both boys wear small Eton collars with basic bows. The boys collared suit jackets have a hint of Norfolk styling. Click on the image to see the card mount. It might help date the image.

Nicholson Brothers (England, 1870s?)

Here we see the Nicholson Brothers with their father. They were from Notingham. The image is undated, but we would guess it was taken in the 1870s, both because of the clothing and the style of the mount. We are not, however, not at all sure. One of HBC's old photograph experts believes that it is more likely from the 1880s, even the early 90s. She bases this assessment on both the card logo style and the clothing. Both boys wear small Eton collars with basic bows. (The small bows are one reason we suspect the 1870s, but the large bows seen in America were less common in Britain.) The boys collared suit jackets have a hint of Norfolk styling. They both wear kneepants with long stockings. Their father has a suit with small lapels. The bpys look to be 8-9 years old.
