** Ronald Nethery and Raymond Nethery

Figure 1.--This studio portrait shows the Nethery brothers, Ronald and Raymond. The boys wear identical plaid floppy bows with white button-on outfits. The blouses have a very large Eton-shaped collars and button on to the shorts. The blouses have mock-double breasted styling and buttonn at the side. Both wear white long stockings and strap shoes, the ankle strsap type. Their hair has been very carefully combed. A reader writes, "My little grandsons can't believe it when they see these photos!" The portrait had a postally unused postcard back. Writtern on the back is "Taken Oct. 1, 1915". The boys look to be about 5-7 years old.

Ronald and Raymond Nethery (United States, 1915)

This studio portrait shows the Nethery brothers, Ronald and Raymond. The boys wear identical outfits. They wear plaid floppy bows with white button-on outfits. (The only difference is the way the floppy bows were tied. We do not know if mother did this on purpose.) The blouses have a very large Eton-shaped collars and button on to the shorts. A reader asks, " Would you call these summer outfits (white suits, white stockings), or is the white just part of the formality? I notice that the picture was taken in very early autumn (Oct. 1st)." HBC would say that this would have been seen as a summer outfit, despit the date. Unfortunately we don't know where the portrait is taken. The weather in norther states begins to get cool in October, but can still be quite pleasant in the South. Another reader writes, "These suits brought a tinge of recognition to me since I recall such button-on suits and long stockings in the early 1930s. I didn't have the floppy bow or the same style of blouses, but the trousers and the stockings are very familiar to me from my childhood. However, I think, as a boy I wore tan long stockings rather than white ones. These boys are clearly wearing supporters, almost certainly fastened to cambric or knitted underwaists. That part I also recall."
