Figure 1.--This is Stewart Legge Symonds. He was the son of Benjamin Symonds, a Clergyman of the Church of England--Rector of Haversham, Buckinghamshire. Stewart was 5 years old at census time in 1901 and I would guess that it was around this time that this photo (a CDV) was taken.

Stewart Legge Symonds (England, 1901)

This is Stewart Legge Symonds. He was the son of Benjamin Symonds, a Clergyman of the Church of England--Rector of Haversham, Buckinghamshire. Stewart was 5 years old at census time in 1901 and I would guess that it was around this time that this photo (a CDV) was taken. Stewart wears an all white sailor outfit, only the top show in the photograph, He also has long curly hair. I thing it is natuarally curly, although I have no information on how it was actually styled. Note that it was not done in ringlets. Some boys had ther hair done in ringlets. This was, however, not as common as it was in America. We do not know when his hair was cut short. It was probably cut some time after this portarit was taken or by the time he reached age 6 and began school. Presumably Stewart went to a private boarding school at age 8, but churchmen were not well paid and private education was frequently a streatch for the families of churchmen.
