Figure 1.-- This photograph was taken in Teulada, southern Sardinia during 1954. The girl's name is Anna Sanna. Like most people at that time, her family lived in a house without running water. She is seen on her way to the public pump to get water that she will carry home. She is wearing a dress with long sleeves. Notice the pigtails, very common for Sardinian girls at that time, and her bare feet, even more common, although with the Italian Economic Miracle scenes like this were becoming less common. The islands (Sicily and Sardinia) along with southern Italy were slower to respond to the economic expansion than the rest of the country. .
