Figure 1.-- Here is a portrait of four siblings (two boys and two girls). The girls are wearing fancy bonnets, dresses, and pinafores. The boys are less formally dressed. They wear Civil War kepis. One boy wears a blouse. His younger brother who still have curls wears a knee pants sailor suit. Some families cut the boys' hair before breeching. In this family the boys were breeched first.

Smith Children (United States, about 1895)

Here is a portrait of four siblings (two boys and two girls). The girls are wearing fancy bonnets, dresses, and pinafores. We think that pinarores were worn more commonly than suggested by the photographic record. The pinafore was a utilitarian garment designed to protect clothing. This may have been why they are not more common in formal portrits. There is a touch of informality here with the children wearng their caps ad hats and blocks and play things featured. Perhps that is why the pinafores are shown and they are rather fancy pinafores. The boys are even less formally dressed than the girls. They wear Civil War kepis. One boy wears a blouse. His younger broither who still have curls wears a knee pants sailor suit. It looks to be done in checked gingham. That was a pattern that was not very common for sailor suits. All the children we can see are wearing long black stockings. Some families cut the boys' hair before breeching. In this family the boys were breeched first. One of the girls is holding a basket of flowers. Children's blocks are scattered on the floor. The younger boy is holding a tin sandpail. The studio was the Baker's Art Gallery in Columbus, Ohio. The studio boasts "Grand Prize and Highest Award at the World's Fair. There are two sets of coin-like logos on the bottom left of the cabinent card--prizes awarded at the Columbian Exhibition (World's Fair). The names of the children are written on the back of the cabinent card in pencil. The only names I could decipher were James Smith and Byron Smith, 3 yrs.
