Figure 1.-- This cabinet card shows Manlee Spores all dressed up in long pants sailor suit for a formal studio portrait. Manlee is not a name we have noted before. He is wearing a traditional sailor suit with a flat top sailor cap and long pants. The pants have a stripe. It was probably a blue suit. Manlee has long ringlet curls. It was rather unusual for a boy to wear such elaborate ringlets with a cap or hat. Usually mother wanted to show them off. He looks to be about 5-years old.

Manlee

This cabinet card shows Manlee Spores all dressed up in long pants sailor suit for a formal studio portrait. Manlee is not a name we have noted before. It was sometimes spelled Manly Spores. The name is spelled Manlee on the back of the portrait and the 1920 Census. It was spelled Manly in the 1910 Census. He looks to be about 5-years old in the portrait (Figure 1). The portrait was taken by a studio in Eugene, Oregon. The cabinet card was one of the new styles that appeared after the turn-of-the 20th century. A reader tells us, "I looked up Manly Spores in Ancestry.com and found a census record for him in the 1910 Federal Census. He was born in about 1902, because his age was listed as 8 years." We know from the Social Security Death Index that he was born March 25, 1902.

Family

Manlee's parents were Daniel F. and Kate K. Spores. His father was from Oregon (c1872- ). We do not know his occupatiomn. His mother was from Iowa (c1874- ). He had a little sister named Mildred. She was only a month old at the time of the 1910 Census.

Location

The family lived in the town of Mohawk, in Lane county, Oregon.

Chronology

As Manlee was about 8 years old in 1910 and he looks about 5 years old in the portraot here, we can deduce the portrait was taken in 1907 or 07. This of course is only an estimate based on our age estimate.

Portrait

The mount measures 7” x 11”. The image itself measures 3” x 5". The mount helps to date the portrait to about 1900-05. In this case we can tell because of the Census listing thay the portrait was taken a little later, probably about 1906-07. This style mount was much less common by the end of the decade.

Clothing

Manlee is wearing a traditional sailor suit with three stripe detailing. He has flat top sailor cap and long pants. The pants have two-stripe detailing whivh mtches the stripes on the blouse. It was probably a blue suit.

Hair

Manlee has long ringlet curls. Rinlets for boys were most common in the late-1880s and 1890s. We stillsee them in the 1900s, especially the early paet of the decade. As we can see here, they were still worn in the late-1900s, but rapidly wentb out of style in the 1910s. It was rather unusual for a boy to wear such elaborate ringlets with a cap or hat. Usually mother wanted to show them off.

Adult Life

We do not know anything about his adult life, except that he stayed in Oregon. He died in June 1967 in the town of Springfield, Lane county, Oregon.
