Figure 1.-- This cabinet card portrait shows two boys wearing sailor suits and hats. Note the long pants with stripes. We are unsure about the colors, but you would guess that the suits are basically blue. The boys are identified on the back as, “Lester Earl” age 11 and “Elmo St. Clar”, age 12 ˝ years. Now er think that the boys are brothers and Earl is a middle name, but they could be cousins and Earl is a family name. The portrait was taken by Hoyt in Hillsboro, Oregon.

Lester Earl and Elmo St. Clar (United States, about 1890s)

We would guess that it was taken in the 1890s. The dealer estimated 1899-1901. She tells us, "I can tell by the style of the card mount and the boy's clothes approximately when the photo was taken." The dealer's estimate seems a little late to us based on tne outfits. We are not yet in a position to estimate the nount style. A factor here is the long pants, especially long pants with stripes. Now sailor suits have always been available with long pants, but we think at the turn of the 20th century that knee pants were much more common. Also note that the sailor suits have poibnted collars rather than the standard "V" collar. We believe this also dates the suits well before the tutn-of-the-century. The dating here is an interesting question. Hopefully as our catalog section expands, we will be able to do a better job of dating the image. Note tht there is nothing like the suits here in the Sears 1902 catalog. All of the Sears suits have the standard "V" collar.
