He has a plain white dickey or undergarment. This blooks to be done in a heavy material, a winter garment. There is no stripe detailing common with sailor outfits, but undual arrow embelishments. And he has perfectly combed Dutch boy hair cut. We do not know if their Dutch ancestry influeced mother's choice of Dutch boy bangs.

This cabinet card potrsaits shows Cornelius Irving VanCleef and Bertha May VanCleef, siblings from New Jersey taken about 1912. he photograph was taken in the VanDerveer studio in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The portrit is not dated, but canot be older than 1915 because the studio closed in 1915. It is an gelatin-silver print. On the back it reads, "Cornelius Irving VanCleef age 5 years and one month and Bertha May VanCleef age One year and 11 months." (The writing looks somewhat like 3 years, but we think 5 is more likely because Irving is cleary more than 1 year older than Bertha.) Irving wears a dark sailor tunic suit, probvaly navy blue. Children began school at age 6, but he will probably miss the September 6-year old cut off.
