*** Julius Weise

Figure 1.--This portrit shows Julius Weise. It is undated, but was probably taken in the 1900s. The portrait shows him in a folk costume with an Alpine jacket and lederhosen. I would have thought it was a Bavarian outfit.

Julius Weise (Germany, 1900s)

This portrit shows Julius Weise. It is undated, but was probably taken in the 1900s. We do know that Julius was photographed in Dresden, a city in eastern Germany close to Czecheslovkia. I'm not sure which Landen that is. The portrait shows him in a folk costume with an Alpine jacket and lederhosen. I would have thought it was a Bavarian outfit. He wears a black wide-brimmed hat. His Alpine style jacket is open, but appears to be double breasted. He appears to have a "H" halter, but has cloth knee pants rather than Lederhosen. He has a wide belt. There is something written on it, but I can't make it out. Note his elaborately knitted knee socks. A HBC reader in Germany tells us that this boy wears an outfit that may be made to look like Bavarian/Alpine tracht rather than the folk costume of the area around Dresden. We are just beginning to assess these images. We think this is an instance of a German mother dressing her son in an outfit that she liked, in this case largrely Bavarian, rather than the folk costume of the area around Dresden. This may have been much like an English or American motherdressing her son in aScottish kilkt outfit. This is a good instance of the spread of Bavarian/Alpine styling by the turn of the 20th century. Notably mothe, however, did not choose leather lederhosen.
