Figure 1.--This CDV portrait shows Fred Watkins wearing a waistless pleated dress with stripe detailing and a huge lace collar, we would guess a crocheted collar. He looks to be about 3 years old. This stripe detailing was often associated with sailor outfits at the time. We know who this was and where Fred was from, but we are not sure about the date. CDVs dominsted the 1860s and much of the 70s, but were less common by the 1880s although we continue to see a few especially in New Englandd into the 1890s. The dress detailing looks to us like the 1870s, but the large collar and studio print font looks more like the 1880s. So we are not sure how to date this one. We suspect the early-1880s is the most likely, but are not at all sure. The studio was E E. Hubbard in Milford, New Hapshire.
