Figure 1.--This stereoview card shows peasant children in the pond at the Royal Forest Klampenborg park in 1897.

A popular park near Copenhagen is Dyrehaven (Jgersborg Dyrehave) the Royal Forest Klampenborg. This was a large forested park north of Copenhagen. Dyrehaven means 'dear park'. The park is noted for its mixture of huge, ancient oak trees and large populations of red and fallow deer. It is one of the three forests included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of hunting preserves in North Zealand north of Copenhagen (2015). Dyrehaven today is maintained as a natural forest. The priority is on natural growth rather than commercial forestry. The foresters only cut down old trees if they are a danger to the public. There are herds of about 2,100 deer in total (300 Red Deer, 1700 Fallow Deer and 100 Sika Deer). There is theannual Hubertus hunt (Hubertusjagten). For many years the Fortunløbet race was held there. The park dates back sevral centuries. The park area was Boveskov (Beech wood), the former property of Valdemar. It was recorfrf in his census, the Liber Census Daniæ (1231). It was Frederik III who decided that the wood of Boveskov should be fenced n and wild deer from the surrounding areas driven into the his newly created park (169). It includerd land used by the farmers from the village of Stokkerup. Frederik's son Christian V he eecuted even more ambitious plans for Dyrehaven. Christian V as part of his eduacation spent time at the court of Louis XIV in France. Here he saw hunting practice with doga that he wanted to organize in Denmark. This required a larger park and Christian V expanded the boundaries. The inhabitants of Stokkerup were ordered to tear down their homes. The village pond is now part of the park. They had to rebuild their himes outside the park area. They were exempted from taxes for 3 years.
