Danish Boys' Hair Styles

Figure 1.--All the younger boy in this family had cropped hair and were dressed in virtually identical sailor suits for a family photograph in 1923. HBC does not if the cropped cut was a school requirement or favored by their partents.

HBC has little information on the hair styles worn by Danish boys. We note a lot of similarity with Germany. Most appear to be quite short hair cuts. In fact, many school-age children in the early 20th century had their hair cropped. I do not know if this was a school requirement or rather just a popular style. HBC has seen boys in several European countries (Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, and others) in the early 20th century wearing similar styles. A HBC reader writes, "The hair cut to me resembles the very short hair cuts popularized in the United States in the 1950 through earlier 1960s and have become popular again during the last few years. This hair style is very different than shaved heads of the Germans." Long hair with Danish boys, as in the rest of Europe, began to become very popular in the 1960s.

Influences

We note a lot of similarity with Germany. Denmark is a small Scandinavian country. Unlike the other Scandinavian countries, Denmark is not separated from Germany by the Baltic Sea. Denmark has a land boundary with Germany that has been moved substantially over time. Likewise Danish boys' clothing is also similar to German boys; clothes.

Styles

HBC has little information on the hair styles worn by Danish boys. Most Danish boys' hair styles appear to be quite short hair cuts.

Bangs

Many Dutch boys had their hair done in bangs.

Cropped/shaved cuts

In fact, many school-age children in the early 20th century had their hair cropped. The boys seen here are a good example. This hair style is very different than shaved heads of the Germans."

Curls

Our information on curls worn by Danish boys is limited at this time. We are no sure how common riglet curls were for boys in the late 19th century. Some tounger boys wore their hair in natural curls.

Long hair

Long hair with Danish boys, as in the rest of Europe, began to become very popular in the 1960s.
