People have been playing board games since civilization began. A board, dice, and counters were found in Ur in Iraq (3,000 BC). Board games werewell established in Engkland in medieval times. There isdetailed infirmaruon since Tudor times. The well-to-do played board games like chess and backgammon. A backgammon set was found on the wreck of the Mary Rose. The rules hve not changed. Ordinary people played nine men’s morris. Other ganes like draughts checkers) and fox and geese. By the 18th century dominoes were also popular. It is at this time that we begin to see all kinds of new ganmes. This process was begun by John Jeffries who invented an entirely new board game named 'A Journey Through Europe' or 'The Play of Geography' (1759). Players raced across a map of Europe. It is in the 19th century that board games came into their own. The first international chess tournament was held in London (1851). Chess was a long-lived game. We see many new board games appearing. Lithography made possible interesting boards and boxes for the games. 'Ludo' was an Asian Indian game that became popular in England (1880s). 'Snakes and Ladders' became popular with chlldren (1892). 'Steeplechase' was introduced (1895). Chinese games like 'Go' and 'Mah Jong' became (early-20th century). 'Monopoly' perhaps the grandaddy of modern games was introduced from America after the Stock Market Crash (1935). Other popular games were 'Cluedo' (1949) and 'Trivial Pursuit' (1982). Unlike many ganes, board gmes were generally played by boys a girls. Chess was a bit of n exception. Few girls played chess.
