The Robinson Family: Individuals--Edward Robinson (1868- )

Figure 1.=-This photograph of Edward was taken in 1878. We note a series of Edward and William with others boys we believe to be school friends. This time Edward is pictured alone. Of note in this picture is his very tidy hair (which I suspect would have been brushed especially for this photograph), the wide high lapels of his jacket and the fairly uncommon wide lapels on his waistcoat.

Edward was Rev. Robinson's younger son. Edward was about 4 years younger than his older brother William which of course affected their relationship. The photographs in the album show Edward at about age 9-13-years of age. This would be just about the age that boys went away to school to pretend preparatory boarding schools. Of course age coventions in the 1870s were still less fixed than they became later. One photograph shows Edward in his cricket whites. With a destinctive tie and belt. We assume that hhis is his school criket uniform, although there werr also villiage cricket. We do not know what school he may have attended. He does not appear to have attended the nearby Sutton Valence School his older brothers attended. Here we see him a year or two earlier then when the cricket portrait was taken. Edward seems to have quite a set of freckles. He wears a suit with a high lapel. Note the neckwear. We are not sure if this was a school outfit or simply a suit he wore. One interesting aspect of his clothes is how dated the styling of his jacket here looks and how modern the cricket image looks. What we have adopted as modern dresswear is the sports wear of the era. Also notice his haircut here. The part is much higher than modern paets.

1878

This photograph of Edward was taken in 1878. We note a series of Edward and William with others boys we believe to be school friends. This time Edward is pictured alone. He is not wearing the same clothes as the other two images of the same date and he appears to be slightly older, so it is logical this photo may have been taken late in 1878 and the previous two early that year or perhaps his mother had him dress up for the individual portrait. This looks to be Edward's best suit. It looks to be a little large, presumably his parents bought it a bit large so he could wear it for an extra year. Again, this picture has been taken against a wall of Chart Sutton Vicarage and a familair chair has been brought out for him to sit on. This pose is more formal than some we have seen, but he still appears totally relaxed. Information like this suggests these photographs were taken by a member of the family. Of note in this picture is his very tidy hair (which I suspect would have been brushed especially for this photograph). Edward or his mum appear to have liked a rther slicked-down look. Edward wears a dark suit. I'm not sure about the color. It does not look black. Also note the wide high lapels of his jacket and the fairly uncommon wide lapels on his waistcoat. This shot is also unusual in that you can just see the length of his socks, which come up a couple of inches above the ankle here. The waistcoat would be part of a three-piece suit as the buttons match those on the cuffs of his jacket. It is difficult to tell if the jacket has a lining or if his shirt cuffs are loose at the wrist. His shoes appear quite low-cut and are slip-ons, but unlike in an earlier image, a sole can be detected here.

1880

We note a close up of Edward taken about 1880. Here we see him a year or two earlier then when the cricket portrait was taken. Edward seems to have quite a set of freckles. He wears a suit with a high lapel. Note the neckwear. We are not sure if this was a school outfit or simply a suit he wore.

1881

We notice a photograph of Edward in his cricket whites taken about 1881. The British Census in 1881 no longr showed Edward living at the house (perhaps he was boarded at his school).
