Figure 1.--Here we see a British stairstep fmily portrait. All the white outfirs clearly inficste that vit was taken during the summer. We believe it was taken duuring a family beach vacation. It was taken in 1908. It was unusual for British children to be photographed barefoot. This leads us to think that they were vcationing at a beach resort. Summer vationing had become an established tradition by the late-19th century. Click on the image for a colorized version.

This studio photo portrait was taken in the United Kingdom (1908). It depicts five siblings whose first names are: (L to R) George, Yvonne, Christopher, Jessamine, and Edmond. We don't know their family name, nor exactly where the photo was taken. We can assume it was taken at a vacation resort, presumably by the sea. Umlike many beach vacation portraits, the backdrop does not help. This is suggested, hoeever, first and foremost by the fact, which was unusual in Britain, that all the children are barefoot. Barefeet was a sign of poverty. An exception was beach resorts. Britain's rail system made it easy and inexpensive to get to the country's many beach resorts. If you look closely at the feet of the two youngest children on the left, you can see that their tan lines clearly show they usually wear open-toed sandals without socks. At the time, this was also not very common and was usually reserved only for vacations or playtime for children from the upper-middle class. We can also see that the youngest boy, George, is wearing a white dress, just like his sisters. This was common in the 19th century, but beginning to go out of style aftter the turn-of-he 20h century.
