All we know for sure about this portarit is that it was a Clapham family. This was a district of south London. They look like a prosperous, middle-class family. We see the mother and father in their living room with their three sons about 4-13 years old. We are not entirely sure waht the younger boy with the trddy is wearing. It looks like a tunic, short pants, and strap shoes. The middle boy wears a black velvet cut-away jacket suit with a white vest. The older boy wears a double-breasted jacket suit.
A reader writes "I cannot tell if it is a studio shot or a shot from home. The curtains could be in front of a window with a shade pulled down. If it is a wall, it would normally be a studio as most people did not place curtains in front of a wall but did in front of a window (both for privacy and warmth). I think the middle boy is wearing a velvet or velveteen suit. I sent HBC pages from the Rowe catalog around 1929 that had a suit similar to it. If it is. The Eton collar blouse is probably satin or silk as is the matching vest. I suspect the blouse is cream and the vest is white but that could be the shadowing.
The youngest son's tunic outfit (I agree with you) also matches an outfit I sent you from that same Rowe catalog. It appears to be white."
